Year 2 - Hamilton and Lennon

In Year 2, the intent is to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that is ambitious for all pupils. We will build on the foundations that pupils have from EYFS and Year One to ensure all pupils have a good knowledge and understanding of the key concepts taught throughout KS1. We aim to promote a genuine love of learning, creativity and develop pupils’ problem solving, relationships, independence and critical thinking skills. Each pupil will feel safe in a nurturing environment where they are valued, encouraged and inspired to meet their full potential.

The Year 2 curriculum has been carefully designed in line with the National Curriculum to build on knowledge and skills pupils have already acquired to ensure progression and depth of understanding. It will be engaging, relatable, relevant, inclusive and meet the needs of all learners, including those of pupils with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities). Teaching will be through direct instruction, discreet support, hands on experiences, sharing of thoughts and ideas and real-life opportunities.

All learning has been carefully planned and will be delivered to a high standard. All pupils progress will be monitored, and teachers will use a range of assessment methods to track progress, identify areas for development, and provide targeted support for individual pupils. Literacy and numeracy skills are embedded across the curriculum, ensuring cross-curricular links and reinforcing key concepts.

The curriculum in Year 2 promotes cultural capital by exposing pupils to a wide range of experiences, including visits, visitors, and opportunities to explore different cultures and traditions as well as ensuring key texts reflect the backgrounds of our pupils. Pupils are encouraged to ask questions, make connections, and develop a broader understanding of the world around them. The school actively promotes British values and fosters a sense of belonging and respect for others.

Pupils in Year 2 will be engaged, motivated, and enthusiastic learners and demonstrate a positive attitude towards their learning. They have a clear understanding of their own learning goals and are actively involved in their own progress. As a school, we prioritise the wellbeing of pupils, providing a supportive and nurturing environment where every child feels valued, respected, and able to thrive. Through collaborative learning, hands-on experiences, and a focus on positive relationships, we aim to cultivate a lifelong love of learning and prepare our pupils for the challenges and opportunities of the future. Each pupil’s strengths are valued and nurtured and we aim that every student has the chance to shine both in and out of the classroom.
