Year 4 - Gandhi and Yousafzai
In Year 4, our goal is to provide a broad, balanced and engaging curriculum that fosters a curiosity and love for learning for all pupils. We aim to build on the strong foundational skills acquired in Year 3, ensuring that each pupil develops confidence and competence in many core areas. Our curriculum is designed to promote holistic development, balancing academic rigour with the cultivation of social, emotional, and physical well-being. Throughout the year, we hope to encourage students to take greater responsibility for their own learning and to develop a growth mindset.
We will challenge students with engaging and diverse curriculum content, with a large emphasis on English and Maths, ensuring students develop strong literacy, numeracy, and critical thinking skills. Our goal is to instil a passion for reading and a strong understanding of numerical concepts, enabling students to apply these skills across a variety of subjects and real-life situations. This will continue to help them as they progress further up the school and into secondary education.
In addition to the core subjects, pupils will explore various other subjects, including science, history and geography which will encourage them to make connections between their learning and the wider world. We also integrate creative arts, design and technology (DT), computing and modern and foreign languages (MFL) to ensure a broad and balanced offering and an improved understanding of subjects from the wider curriculum. Additionally, physical education and personal, social, health, and economic (PSHE) education are taught on a regular basis. This is to encourage healthy and active lifestyles and facilitate an improved understanding of themselves, others and society.
Furthermore, students will be provided with opportunities for creative expression and problem-solving. They will be encouraged to think imaginatively, critically, take risks, and learn from their mistakes, preparing students to become resilient, reflective, and resourceful learners. Each day, we will strive to nurture each child's confidence, resilience, and social skills within a supportive and stimulating environment. Students will be encouraged to work both independently and collaboratively, developing respect, empathy, and effective communication between one another. This combined holistic approach across the school, will hopefully produce assured and conscientious children, which have developed a real passion and interest in the world around them, that will stay with them throughout their educational journey and into their adult life.
Our inclusive approach values each child’s unique abilities and backgrounds, fostering a supportive community, where every student feels valued and motivated to achieve their full potential. Through collaborative learning, hands-on experiences, and a focus on positive relationships, we aim to cultivate a lifelong love of learning and prepare our pupils for the future. Children’s efforts and achievements will be widely recognised in class and across the school, with ‘Star of the Week’ certificates and ‘Blue Star Value’ badges given out on a weekly basis, among other awards.
Students will also be encouraged to consider their role within the school, their local community and the wider world. They will additionally, be provided with opportunities to participate in a variety of afterschool clubs and in-school initiatives, as well as extracurricular trips, events and activities. This exposure to the school’s expansive curriculum and wider provision, will provide learning and experiences which will enable students to be adaptive and well prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
